Austen Warikoru is an accomplished technocrat. He has had a successful career with the Nigeria Customs Service which he joined as a Superintendent Collector II, in August 1982, and rose through the ranks before retiring in May 2017, as a Deputy Comptroller General (DCG), after over three decades of meritorious service.
A graduate of English Literature from the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria, he also has TRACE Anti-Bribery Specialist Accreditation. He has attended various courses locally and overseas.
A diligent, astute, and result oriented professional, he has good communications, inter-personal and commendable team-building abilities; attributes which he deployed effectively for positive outcomes. He has traversed various Departments and Commands where he acquired relevant experience in diverse areas of Customs service, Domestic and International Trade Facilitation, Tariff Classification and Valuation, Intelligence, Operations, Enforcement of Government Trade Guidelines and Regulations, Compliance Monitoring, Strategic Research and Planning, Human Resource Management, and Management. He also functioned as Customs Intelligence Unit – Team Leader, and later Comptroller. He was Customs Area Controller (CAC) in three (3) strategic Commands – PTML Command, Port Harcourt Area I Command, Tin Can Island Port Command. He was Comptroller (World Bank) and later Comptroller (Transition) at the Strategic Research and Planning Department.
On his promotion to the rank of Assistant Comptroller General, he resumed as the Assistant Comptroller General (ACG) Human Resource Management and then Assistant Comptroller General (ACG) Economic Relations in the Strategic Research and Planning Department. As a Deputy Comptroller General (DCG), he was again posted to head the Human Resource Department of the Service and a member of Nigeria Customs Service Management Team. He also served as Nigeria Customs Service representative on various Government Inter-Ministerial and Inter-Agencies Committees.
He was the Best Graduating Officer of the Customs Intelligence Unit Training Course in 2005. He also earned Commendation for the Highest Revenue Earning Comptroller at Tin Can Island Port Command in 2011.
He is currently a Consultant on Customs, Excise, Trade and Governmental Affairs. He is also the Operations Director at NODAWAY Nigeria Limited, a Solar Energy solutions provider.
Austen is a Council member of Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
